First, consult the online course catalog. Economics majors are encouraged to take courses in mathematics, and since Math 107 is a prerequisite for ECO 230, they should consider taking Math 107 to fulfill their Gen Ed requirement in Mathematics.
While there is no single best path through the Economics major, some are better than others. The following is a set of guidelines that we believe is the best path through the major for most students.
Finally, consult the General Education policies on the number of courses that can be taken in any major.
First Year
Take at least one introductory course. If you take an Intro Econ course in your first semester and really like it, take another Intro course in the second semester.
Math 107 - Introduction to Statistics
Econ 111 - Introductory Macroeconomics
Econ 112 - Introductory Microeconomics
Sophomore Year
Complete introductory courses and take at least one Intermediate course. If you have a strong interest or are really sure you want to major in Economics, try to complete all intermediate courses including Econometrics.
Econ 205 - Intermediate Microeconomics
Econ 206 - Intermediate Macroeconomics
Econ 230 - Econometrics
One 200-level elective course
WARNING: Don't wait until your senior year to do Econometrics or Intermediate Micro theory!
Declare your major by March 31 of your sophomore year.
Start thinking about whether you may want to do an honor's thesis.
Junior Year
If you have not already done so, complete ALL intermediate courses, including Econometrics.
NOTE: You will need permission from the Chair to continue in the major if you have not completed Econometrics by the end of the junior year.
If you are thinking about doing an honors thesis, remember that you need to have completed at least one course in the field in which you want to do the thesis by the end of your junior year. You will need to write a preliminary proposal by February 15 and a final proposal by March 15. If you are going to be abroad in the spring, you should try to do your honors proposal before you go.
Take one or two field courses during this year, including courses that are prerequisites for a seminar you may want to take senior year.
Senior Year
If you have gotten this far and still haven't taken Econ 230, you will have already gotten permission from the Chair of the Department to defer taking Econometrics to the fall semester of your senior year.
Take a seminar (or individual or honors study). Take more field courses.
