Derek Turner

As a philosophy professor, here at Connecticut College, Derek Turner has been involved with the Goodwin-Niering Center since he arrived at the College in 2001. Prior to his appointment as Karla Heurich Harrison '28 Director of the Goodwin-Niering Center he served as associate director from 2014 - 2020. His most recent book, Paleoaesthetics and the Practice of Paleontology (2019), explores connections between environmental aesthetics and the philosophy of natural historical science. He has written on a variety of topics in environmental philosophy, including de-extinction, rewilding, the precautionary principle, the ethics of radical environmental activism, and (most recently) the importance of protecting living fossil taxa from extinction.
