Live and learn locally
The Holleran Center for Community Action and Public Policy is an interdisciplinary academic center at Connecticut College that advances learning, teaching, research, and community partnerships. Our mission is to cultivate responsible civic engagement and leadership for social justice through engaged scholarship and reciprocal community collaborations.
The Holleran Center works with students, staff, faculty, and community partners to advance community engagement in New London, uniting with over 50 organizations in the region. The Holleran Center cultivates and maintains strong relationships with community leaders to prioritize our partners’ goals and to create valuable learning experiences for Connecticut College students. Our community partner programs address education, youth activities, public health, government, economics, nonprofit management, housing, the arts, the environment, and more. The Holleran Center provides training, supervision, and transportation for students in these programs.
The Certificate Program in Community Action and Public Policy (PICA) deepens students’ knowledge and skills as scholar-activists through engaged learning with peers, faculty, staff, and community mentors. Through PICA, students develop a rich understanding of structural inequalities, apply best practices in promoting social justice, and practice community-building skills. PICA scholars complete individual programs of study, community engagement experiences, and a senior integrative project on a topic of choice.
The Holleran Center supports academic departments, centers, pathways, staff, and faculty in incorporating best practices for community-based learning and engaged scholarship throughout the Connecticut College curriculum. Our mission is to cultivate responsible civic engagement and leadership for social justice through engaged scholarship and reciprocal community collaborations.
