Connecticut College encourages prospective students in secondary schools to engage in advanced level work. Individual departments have the discretion to decide if Advanced Placement and its equivalents should count toward the major or minor and to determine the course equivalency. Students should be aware, however, that Advanced Placement credit may not be counted toward the Modes of Inquiry or any other components of the Connections program

Advanced Placement (AP) Policy

AP credit scores for matriculated students must be on file with the Registrar's Office in order to be evaluated. We are only able to accept scores that are mailed directly by the Educational Testing Service. AP credit is posted for incoming students once they have arrived on campus and for current students once the AP scores are received. Once AP credit is posted to the student's academic record, it will not be removed.

Students are awarded 4 credit hours for all AP examination scores of 4 or 5 listed on the College Entrance Examination Board website (https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/apcourse), with the exception of AP Precalculus and the two capstone courses, AP Research and AP Seminar. The College does not award credit for AP Precalculus, AP Research, or AP Seminar. AP credit hours awarded may be applied toward the 128 credits required for graduation.

Degree credit will not be awarded for AP work if an equivalent introductory course has already been taken, either at Connecticut College or transferred from another institution. Advanced Placement credit may not be counted toward the Modes of Inquiry or any other components of the Connections program.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Policy

Matriculated students should submit a request to evaluate and post International Baccalaureate work. Students are advised to discuss credit transfer with their class dean and to determine the best time in their career to submit the request.

Students who present the International Baccalaureate may be awarded 4 credit hours for each “Higher Level” individual exam score of 5 or above. All eligible scores appearing on the official exam report will be posted to the student's academic record.

The letter grade equivalency for each exam score will appear on the academic record and be included in the student's overall GPA. Once IB credit is posted to the student's academic record, it will not be removed.

British A-Level Examinations and Other Foreign Exams

Matriculated students should submit a request to evaluate and post British A-Level Examinations and other Foreign Exams. Students are advised to discuss credit transfer with their class dean and to determine the best time in their career to submit the request.

Students who present the A-Level certificate may be awarded 4 credit hours for each “Advanced Level” exam grade of “C” or above. All eligible grades appearing on the official exam report will be posted to the student's academic record.

Students who present the results of certain foreign examinations, such as the German Abitur and its Northern European equivalents, the Swiss Maturité, the Italian Maturita and others of similar merit, may be awarded 4 credit hours for each individual course. All eligible grades appearing on the official exam report will be posted to the student's academic record.

The letter grade equivalency for each exam grade will appear on the academic record and be included in the student's overall GPA. Once credit is posted to the student's academic record, it will not be removed.
