Criteria for Pre-Matriculation Transfer Credit

College-level courses completed prior to matriculation at Connecticut College may be transferable for general credit, subject to an evaluation conducted by the Office of the Registrar. Courses must have been taken through accredited institutions of higher education.

First-year and transfer applicants are required to submit transcripts for all coursework to the Office of Admission as part of the application process. Transfer students, in most cases, will receive their transfer credit determination upon admission. Further questions about transfer admission should be directed to the Office of Admission.

Additional information about potential transfer credit and the Connections program can be found here.

Criteria for credit transfer can be found below, depending on the date of matriculation.

Please note that individual departments have sole discretion to determine whether a transfer course will count toward a major or minor and to determine course equivalency, including for pre-requisite purposes.

For Students Matriculating in Fall 2021 or later:

Connecticut College may grant general credit for pre-matriculation coursework for students matriculating in fall 2021 or later, provided that the course was taken through an accredited college or university. Transfer credit may be awarded for courses taken prior to matriculation if, upon review by the Registrar's Office, they are found to have an approximate counterpart in the Connecticut College curriculum and were completed with grades of C or better.

All eligible coursework appearing on the official transcript will be posted to the student's academic record. Please note that the letter grade of each course will be posted on the student's academic record and will be included in the student's overall GPA. Once pre-matriculation coursework is posted to the student's academic record, it will not be removed.

First-Year Students

First-year students who have taken courses prior to matriculation that meet the transfer credit criteria will have the opportunity to request that this coursework be included on their academic record, once they have arrived on campus in their first semester and have met with their adviser to discuss this. Credit is not automatically posted to the record.

First-year student process for requesting that pre-matriculation credit be posted:

  • Discuss the courses that you've taken with your adviser once you arrive on campus
  • After discussing this with your adviser, complete the Request to Post Pre-Matriculation Credit form
  • An official transcript from the college or university must be on file with the Registrar's office

Once credit is posted, if it potentially meets the criteria to satisfy a component of Connections, first-year students should reach out to request an evaluation as follows: to the chair of the specific language department for courses that may satisfy the language requirement or to curriculum@conncoll.edu for courses that may satisfy the Modes of Inquiry.

Transfer Students

Coursework for transfer students will be posted prior to their arrival on campus. Final official transcripts from the colleges or universities must be on file. Courses that meet criteria to satisfy Connections requirements will receive that designation at the time the transfer work is posted.

For Students who Matriculated prior to Fall 2021:

First-year students who matriculated prior to fall 2021, have taken courses prior to matriculation that meet all transfer credit criteria, and who wish to have their pre-matriculation coursework evaluated for transfer should submit a PreMatriculation Credit Transfer Evaluation Application to the Registrar's office. An official transcript from the college or university must be on file. Questions should be directed to degree@conncoll.edu.

Transfer credit may be awarded as general credit for courses taken prior to matriculation if, upon review by the Registrar's Office, they are found to have an approximate counterpart in the Connecticut College curriculum and were completed with grades of C or better. Online courses taken prior to matriculation are not eligible for transfer.

Courses taken prior to enrollment at the College, including prior to secondary school graduation, must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Completed on a college campus
  • Completed in a class with matriculated college students
  • Course work was not used to satisfy any high school graduation requirements

For students who matriculated prior to Fall 2021, credit will not be awarded for programs where the above criteria have not been satisfied, e.g., the University of Connecticut's Early College Experience Program, Kenyon College's SCA Program, Syracuse University's Project Advance or CLEP testing.

Coursework for transfer students will be posted prior to their arrival on campus. Final official transcripts from the colleges or universities must be on file.

All eligible coursework appearing on the official transcript will be posted to the student's academic record. Please note that the letter grade of each course will be posted on the student's academic record and will be included in the student's overall GPA. Once pre-matriculation coursework is posted to the student's academic record, it will not be removed.
