Courtney Sender is a fellow of MacDowell, the Corporation of Yaddo, and Ucross, and was the 2019-20 George Bennett Writer-in-Residence at Phillips Exeter Academy. Her debut story collection, In Other Lifetimes All I've Lost Comes Back to Me, is forthcoming March 1, 2023.
Courtney's work as a fiction writer straddles realism and magical realism, and interrogates the relationship between Holocaust inheritance and contemporary love, longing, and loneliness. Her secondary interests include nonfiction writing and Holocaust studies, the latter of which she studied at Harvard Divinity School.
Courtney's essays and articles have appeared in The New York Times' Modern Love and The Atlantic. Her fiction has appeared in AGNI, The Kenyon Review, American Short Fiction, Tin House, Prairie Schooner, and many others, and has won first place prizes from Graywolf Press, Glimmer Train, The Mississippi Review, Boulevard, Michigan Quarterly Review, the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival, and others. She holds an MFA in fiction from the Johns Hopkins Writing Seminars, an MTS from Harvard Divinity School, and a B.A. in English from Yale.
