Student Created Resources for Transgender Students
Health and counseling services
Our Student Health and Counseling Services staff have experience working with transgender students and can provide general healthcare, counseling and support, as they do for all students. Effective 2014-2015, students enrolled in the student health plan will receive comprehensive coverage for transgender healthcare. Contact the health center or the insurance provider for more information. For more comprehensive transgender health services, see:
Educational trainings
The LGBTQIA Center also regularly offers educational trainings for the Connecticut College community. We do faculty and staff specific sessions, as well as student leader specific sessions, and we're happy to partner with any office or organization to craft something that specifically meets your needs. If you'd like to plan a training on gender or sexuality, please feel free to reach out via lgbtqia@conncoll.edu.
Restrooms
Access to public accommodations has been a central struggle of many civil rights movements throughout history, including that of African Americans, disability rights activists and LGBTQIA people. Restrooms, locker rooms, dressing rooms and changing areas are common spaces that we navigate on a daily basis; they also serve as lightning rods for the enforcement of gender norms, the policing of transgender people, and sadly, a significant amount of violence. Gender inclusive restrooms are one small but important step in making the world a safer place for transgender and gender non-conforming people.
Connecticut College has gender-inclusive restrooms in most academic buildings and nearly all residence halls. Additionally, the Connecticut College Student Handbook features a bathroom access statement that affirms the rights of community members to use the bathroom that best corresponds to their gender identity.
