Professor Assor named Judith Ammerman ’60 Director of the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology
Associate Professor of Art Nadav Assor has been named the next Judith Ammerman ’60 Director of the College’s Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology. Assor succeeds Professor of Art Andrea Wollensak, who has served as the Judith Ammerman ’60 Director since 2014. Assor’s term will begin on July 1, 2020.
A member of the Connecticut College faculty since 2012, Assor founded the Expanded Media area in the Studio Art Department, in which he teaches classes including “Introduction to Digital Time-Based Media,” “Video Installation,” “Sound Art” and “Experimental 3D.”
Assor’s work takes on systems of technological mediation that are frequently military-industrial in origin, from eye-tracking cameras to drones, telepresence-robots and mixed-reality environments. Low-fi versions of these are critically repurposed in his work to function as a means for creating communities, connections, intimate human dialog and visceral audio-visual-tactile experiences. Assor’s videos, installations and performances have been featured in film festivals, museums, galleries and live venues across North America, Europe and Asia.
As the Judith Ammerman ’60 Director, Assor will oversee the day-to-day development of the Ammerman Center, including the Center’s certificate program, student advising and Center programming.
“Taking on the directorship role at the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology is a great honor and privilege. I commit to leverage it during these difficult times and beyond to support and bring in those communities that are most impacted by the multiple crises facing us as a society,” Assor said. “This is work that the Center has already started doing under the inspiring leadership of Andrea Wollensack, and, with the help of the Center’s community, I look forward to carrying it forward.”
